My second look this year at Wemyss Malts this time the Hive “batch strength” which is bottled at 54.5% and again is a blended malt using ten malts with the emphasis on Speyside.
Again as this is over 50% I have taken a couple of drops of water with it.
Thanks once more to the chaps at Wemyss and The Whisky Wire for the sample.
Nose. If orange cider was a thing then this would smell of that, crisp toffee apples, honey apple crumble and bakewell tart, really nice sweet biscuit feel.
Palate. Sweetness and lots of it, feels young too, honey, golden syrup and slight suggestion of rum soaked raisins. Letting this sit for a while and milky chocolate, honeycomb, some spicy notes, warm ginger and a touch of clove.
Finish. A little too sweet on the finish for me but with a nice waxy feel which I like and leaves a pleasant toffee fruit crumble taste.
If you like your whiskies on the younger side, sweet and easy drinking then this is worth a punt although I’m not entirely sure that the high strength is needed for something like this, it’s also “limited” to 6000 bottles.
Thanks to Wemyss Malt for the sample and the bottle is available via several online retailers.
